Learning to Read & Reading to Learn

CAPIT is a phonics curriculum that teaches students the foundational reading skills they need to become independent readers. Reading instruction has two general phases.

  • Phase 1: Learning to Read

  • Phase 2: Reading to Learn

In the first phase, students learn to read fluently and spell accurately. Reading and Spelling (i.e., decoding and encoding) are essential foundational skills students acquire on their way to becoming independent readers.

In phase 1, we use simple content, allowing students to focus on automating their decoding and encoding skills. High-level content would unnecessarily overload a student’s cognitive ability and hamper their ability to automate this process.

CAPIT covers the entire phonics continuum, starting with the sounds (phonemes) that correspond with the Lowercase and Uppercase Letters.

We then teach students how letters and sounds blend to create real words. First, students read and spell isolated words and soon progress to two and three-word phrases. Eventually, they read and spell complete sentences that include punctuations and capital letters.

As students become proficient in encoding and decoding, they can add consonant clustersconsonant digraphs, and vowel diphthongs to their repertoire.

Level 3: Digraphs & Diphthongs

Every student—regardless of age—must complete the Learning to Read phase before they can free up working memory to analyze higher-level content in multiple sentences or paragraph form.

After the foundational skills become automated, students are ready to transition from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn. They can now begin reading longer and deeper text.

Currently, CAPIT fully covers the Learning to Read phase (Level 1-2-3). Future levels (4-5-6, coming soon) will transition students into the Reading to Learn phase.
