When we read English we blend sounds from left to right:
/a/ + /t/ = /at/.

/c/ + /a/ /t/ = /cat/.

Reading Skill 1 Sound – 2 Letters
When two identical sounds follow each other, you say the sound one time. It is not: /d/ + /u/ + /k/ + /k/. You only need to make one /k/ sound. Examples: duck, sock.

When two identical sounds follow each other, you say the sound one time. It is not: / a/ + /d/ + /d/. It is /a/ + /d/. You only need to make one /d/ sound. Examples: add, egg, off.
