Direct Instruction for Individuals and Small Groups
Which lesson do I teach when working with individuals and small groups?
Individual Instruction | Small Group Instruction | Creating Groups
Instruction for individuals and small groups differs from whole-group instruction. Here’s how to adapt your approach.
(For lesson recommendations for whole-group instruction, Click Here.)
Direct Instruction for Individuals
Have the student work on their device while you observe and provide direct instruction (e.g., explanations) as they progress. Challenge them to verbalize and explain what they are reading and spelling, and offer feedback to guide their learning.
Direct Instruction for Small Groups
Group students by similar skill levels based on their lesson numbers. Identify the lowest student in that group, and teach the lowest lesson, be it a Reading Skill, a Spelling Test, or a Spelling Card. For example:
Student A: Level 2, Lesson 43
Student B: Level 2, Lesson 55
Student C: Level 2, Lesson 67
You should teach and model Level 2, Lesson 43.
Grouping students by skill level and modeling to the lowest lesson within that range ensures targeted instruction that supports individual progress while reinforcing shared learning goals.
